American Airlines said one person suffered minor injuries, while San Francisco International Airport said three people suffered minor injuries while evacuating down an emergency slide. No one required medical evacuation, the airport said.
The airline said some passengers were evacuated via emergency slides, while others left the plane via the boarding bridge.
Firefighters were called in and extinguished the source of the smoke.
At the time, the Airbus A321 was scheduled to depart for Miami.
