What if instead of buying the latest iPhone every time Apple released it, you bought the same amount of Apple stock?
There is Tweets flying around If he had bought Apple stock every time the iPhone was released, he would have made hundreds of millions of dollars. The math is wrong (if he had spent $20,000 on Apple stock when the iPhone rumors first started circulating, he’d have at best $1.5 million by now), but either way Yes, it will only make sense if you are clairvoyant. In 2007, Apple knew when to release its phones and at what price.
I thought a fairer way to calculate it would be to imagine buying a top-of-the-line iPhone or spending the same amount on Apple stock every time Apple releases a new iPhone. If you did, by my calculations, you would have spent about $16,000 on iPhones over the years (about $20,000 in today’s money). If I had bought Apple stock instead, I would have made about $147,000 today, or about $131,000.
The exact numbers are below.
