Apple officially announced the September 12th iPhone 15 event yesterday, teasing the tagline “Wonderlust.” In today’s report, analysts Ming-Chi Kuo Here are some updates on the manufacturing of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, as well as some of the challenges Apple has faced along the way.

Kuo said the iPhone 15 Pro Max is “the last project to kick off,” meaning the production schedule is later than other iPhone 15 models. This echoes last week’s analyst report that the iPhone 15 Pro Max launch could be delayed by up to three to four weeks.
Kuo also said that Apple is facing production challenges regarding the new titanium frame material used in the iPhone 15 Pro lineup. The challenge here lies in the “high degree of processing difficulty and significant design changes during development.”
In particular, the analyst points out that the biggest factor was Apple’s cancellation of its solid-state button project. As a refresher, Apple originally planned to replace the physical volume buttons and mute switch with solid-state buttons, but abandoned that plan due to manufacturing issues. This decision was obviously made quite late in the development process, and would have a lasting impact on mass production.
Other Trivia Kuo’s report:
- The main manufacturing issues were with the laminated CIS, panels, battery (which expands when exposed to heat), and the titanium frame.
- Although the CIS stacking issue has been resolved by increasing production capacity, it still affects approximately 10-15% of regular model shipments.
- The panel issue was resolved by changing the supplier’s shipping ratio.
- Battery and frame issues were resolved primarily through improved production yields.
- The titanium frame should also contribute to weight reduction.
Apple will announce the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineup at its special event “Wonderlust” on September 12th, and pre-orders will begin on September 15th.
