South Africa is home to a stretch of godlike coastline that is virtually untouched.
The Western Cape in particular is home to some truly stunning beach gems along the beautiful Cape West Coast region. Devastation caused by large-scale mining activities It dries out the land and pollutes the oceans.
Conde Nast Traveler He compares a beautiful beach that rejuvenates the senses to one of his favourite poems, “something that is unique, important and makes the heart sing”, and recognises the important place that sand occupies in human life. In other words, what is happiness without a beautiful beach?
The magazine did its best to compile a list of the world’s best beaches, from Mozambique to the Philippines, but “instead of the typical sandy stretches dotted with parasols and swarms of tourists, we’ve tracked down places where you might have to go a little further, but which are still incredibly beautiful and often uncrowded.”
Some lesser known South African spots made it onto the list – lesser known compared to, say, Clifton.
That’s Die Platt, Walker Bay Nature Reserve, Hermanus.
“At Die Pratt, a ruggedly beautiful stretch of sand surrounded by rocky limestone outcrops near Hermanus, South Africa’s whale capital, don’t be surprised if you occasionally spot a southern right whale swimming just offshore,” Conde Nast wrote. [don’t mention the rabies] Sit down on the rocky shore here and you’ll see the ground strewn with huge, pearly, lustrous abalone shells.”
Conde Nast is also fascinated by the history hidden in this windswept sandy beach, noting that it’s home to Klipgat Cave, a bat-filled cave where Late Mesolithic people lived up to 85,000 years ago.
It is said that if you look closely, you might even find ancient tools lying on the ground.
Finally, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve has also been named in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards for 2022 and 2023, offering guests 6,177 spacious acres of untouched nature.
And as it’s currently whale season, this Hermanus beach is sure to be attractive in more ways than just those mentioned above.
