Meta is change the way This feature labels content that has been edited or altered by AI tools on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. For this type of content, Meta is moving the “AI-informed” label to the post’s feed. In the past, the label appeared directly below a user’s name.
The company says the label will still appear below content it detects was created by an AI tool. That means that while the label is hidden for content that was altered or edited by AI tools, it will still be prominently displayed below content that was created entirely by an AI guide.
For AI-generated content, Meta will “share whether the content is labeled because of common industry signals or because someone exposed themselves,” the company says.
Meta says the change, which will roll out next week, will “better reflect the extent to which AI is used in content” on its platforms.
By making AI-labeled information harder to find, it may be easier to trick users with AI-edited content, especially as editing tools become more advanced.
Given that generative AI is a relatively newer technology, this isn’t the first time Meta has changed how such content is labeled on its platforms. In July, the company changed its AI label from “made with AI” to “AI information” after Meta complained from photographers who said the label was being added to real images.
At the time of the change, Meta said the original wording of the label wasn’t clear enough for users to understand that some images with the label weren’t necessarily generated using AI, but may have been edited using AI-powered tools.
