Nvidia is announcing three RTX 40-series super cards this month that offer higher performance at similar or better price points than existing cards. The price of the RTX 40 series, especially his RTX 4080, is a sore point for gamers. Nvidia will replace this GPU with his RTX 4080 Super and reduce the price to $999 when it launches on January 31st.
The $200 price cut will put a lot of pressure on AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT ($899) and XTX ($999) cards. Prior to the launch of the RTX 4080 Super, the RTX 4070 Super will be available on January 17th for $599, and the RTX 4070 Ti Super will be available on January 24th for $799 with some interesting changes. Nvidia will also phase out his RTX 4070 Ti, but will continue to sell the RTX 4070 at a low price of $549.
The RTX 4080 Super has Nvidia’s full AD103 chip, so it’s not cut down like the previous RTX 4080. It has faster memory with more CUDA cores and 736 GB/s of bandwidth, comes with the same 16 GB of G6X, and can draw up to 320 watts of power.
Nvidia is aiming the RTX 4080 Super at existing RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 2080 Super owners rather than RTX 40 series adopters. Depending on the game, the performance increase over the RTX 4080 is 1-5%, so you’re basically getting RTX 4080-level (or better) performance for $200 less.
The RTX 4070 Ti Super may be the most interesting of the three cards in the RTX 40 Series Super GPU. Nvidia has increased the memory to 16 GB on his G6X and upgraded it to the 256-bit memory bus found on the RTX 4080/4090 cards, rather than the 192-bit bus on his original RTX 4070 Ti.
Combined with more CUDA cores, this feels like a bigger upgrade than the RTX 4080 Super changes. The price remains $799, but you get more memory and performance. According to Nvidia, the RTX 4070 Ti Super should offer around a 10% performance increase compared to the original RTX 4070 Ti.
Nvidia also didn’t have to sacrifice more power consumption to provide this improved performance. The RTX 4070 Ti Super ships with the same maximum power consumption of 285 watts as the original, but there is no Founders Edition version of this card.
Nvidia claims the new RTX 4070 Super is faster than the RTX 3090 while using less power with up to 220 watts of power consumption. This is only 20 watts more than the original RTX 4070, which at 1440p was able to provide performance comparable to the RTX 3080. It’s on the same 192-bit memory bus and 12GB of G6X memory, but Nvidia has increased the number of CUDA cores for better performance.
The RTX 4070 Super will ship on January 17th for the same $599 price as the original, which could make it a more attractive upgrade for existing RTX 3070 or 2070 owners. Nvidia also claims about a 15% performance increase from the original His RTX 4070 to His RTX 4070 Super.
Both the RTX 4080 Super and RTX 4070 Super will be available on Nvidia’s Founders Edition cards. Although they look almost identical to the original versions, Nvidia chose a slightly darker shade for the alloy frames to make these cards stand out. If you’re not interested in Nvidia’s own Founders Edition, there are plenty of options from third-party manufacturers like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, and PNY.
