Elon Musk’s social network X has finally rolled out one of the most requested features for direct messages: the ability to edit the message.
Over the weekend, X rolled out a message editing feature for iOS users. An engineer at the company posted about the launch and said that the message editing feature will be available on more platforms soon.
Here’s how to use it:
- Open any Direct Message chat from your X iOS app.
- Long press on any message you sent or tap on the three dots menu next to the message.
- Select the “Edit Message” option to edit the sent message.
According to the support page, there is no time limit on editing messages. In our testing, we found that you can also edit old direct messages on the platform. However, you can only make five total edits to a message. The social network applies the same limit to editing posts as well.
While the X app says it keeps a log of edited messages for security reasons, it doesn’t currently display the release date of edited messages.
Users expect to be able to edit their messages in messaging apps, as other chat apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger have had this functionality for a while now. Apple also added the ability to edit messages sent via iMessage with iOS 16.
